About This Place

Situated in the heart of Richmond at 19 Church Wynd, Barkers Of Richmond is a beloved destination for lovers of traditional British cuisine, specializing in classic fish and chips with a Northern twist. This charming eatery offers an authentic dining experience that has won the hearts of locals and visitors alike, serving up generous portions of freshly caught fish, perfectly crispy chips, and comforting sides that evoke the nostalgic flavors of a true British chippy.

Among Barkers’ standout menu highlights is the succulent Small Fish and Chips Scraps with Curry Sauce, a delightful dish that captures both hearty flavor and exceptional value. The fish’s batter strikes a masterful balance—light and irresistibly crisp—encasing tender, flaky white fish inside that melts in your mouth with each bite. The chips are golden and piping hot, boasting a fluffy interior that complements the fish brilliantly. Pairing these with a rich, aromatic curry sauce adds a subtle kick, elevating the flavor profile in a way that feels comforting yet exciting.

The restaurant’s commitment to quality extends beyond just the food. Customers repeatedly praise the friendly and welcoming service, making it a spot where you feel more like a guest than just a customer. Dining upstairs offers a cozy retreat—a perfect place to unwind after exploring Richmond’s picturesque streets and rolling hills. And for those sunny days, benches near the nearby church provide an idyllic outdoor setting to enjoy your meal soaking up the sunshine.

What truly sets Barkers Of Richmond apart is its unbeatable combination of value and taste. As one satisfied diner, Graeme Powell, puts it, the £11.95 full meal deal—including fish and chips, a side, bread and butter, a warming pot of tea or coffee, and a dessert—is “an absolute bargain.” This generous spread ensures you leave feeling thoroughly satisfied without stretching your wallet, making it an irresistible destination for both casual lunches and leisurely dinners.

Regular patrons like Louise D and Jaid Flatley highlight not only the consistent freshness and quality of the food but also the sense of tradition and comfort that every visit brings. For first-timers, like Aaliyah, the generous portions and reasonable prices come as a delightful surprise, transforming a simple meal into a memorable culinary experience. And if you ever find yourself unsure where to eat, as David Williams discovered, a quick tip from a local will lead you right to Barkers—a testament to its sterling reputation within the community.

In short, Barkers Of Richmond is more than just a place to grab fish and chips—it’s a destination that lovingly preserves the heritage of Northern British cuisine, offering dishes brimming with flavor, authenticity, and heartwarming value. Whether you're a long-time devotee or a curious visitor, this is the kind of restaurant that invites you to slow down, enjoy hearty comfort food, and savor the genuine spirit of Richmond.

Lunch time special was a great deal, £6 for small fish, chips and peas. Plenty to satisfy us and service was very friendly, would definitely recommend. Amazing value! Benches near the church to sit and eat in the sunshine, fab!

Without a doubt the fish & chips here are some of the best in the north, including those at Whitby. The food is cooked to perfection, the fish batter is thin and crispy, and at £11.95 (restaurant) for fish and chips, a side, bread and butter, tea or coffee and a dessert, it’s an absolute bargain. Today was our 12th time visiting here, driving 30 minutes from Ripon.

first time visiting Richmond, now reading some of these reviews have shocked me. we came here for fish and chips and we was stunned! not only was the price cheap for fish & chips but the items included (fish & chips, bread & butter, tea or coffee and a pudding) would cost a fortune on its own in some fish shops. we ordered a large and couldn’t understand why people was ordering the small/standard but as soon as our food came out we could understand why. the fish was chunky and red hot, the curry sauce I wasn’t too keen on & the chips were a little bit cold. (I couldn’t eat all mine anyways.) but the pudding & service made the meal amazing anyways. I absolutely enjoyed what I could and would definitely visit again. (EDIT forgot to add photos and my family laughed and said it would of fed 4 of us)

Well, the Google listing for my intended destination being completely wrong I asked a passing local and I was directed across the street to Barkers. Top advice. I ate upstairs in the restaurant - after a long day in the hills I needed a sit down. Proper Northern fish & chips experience - standard size fish, chips, mushy peas, bread & butter and a pot of tea. Served accompanied with authentic Yorkshire ironic dry wit (something another reviewer clearly misinterpreted but I welcomed). Total traditional experience at a good price. You'll not get this sort of thing in "your London".

Every time we visit Richmond we come here for lunch. It’s the best chippy around, and I’m not always a big fan of them. The fish is fresh and tasty, the chips are spot on. We love the option to sit upstairs and the cost is so reasonable

Wow , Proper Yorkshire Fish and Chips. Everything was freshly cooked. The batter on my fish was so crispy. The best I’ve tasted in a long time. In a lovely market town . Well worth a visit. £6.95 for a really good value meal.
